In the US there are over 193,000 new cases of breast cancer, and over 40,000 deaths cause by this disease yearly. With new advances in diagnostic technology, these mortality numbers can be reduced if people are diagnosed earlier, and receive the proper treatment. The best way to get early diagnoses is to be aware, and get the proper screening. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

With such reputable cause, Sport Club Português over the past few years has participated in their annual Komen North Hersey Race for the Cure which raises thousands of dollars for its cause.  This year SCP’s youth group, SCP Juventude decided to take this initiative further by having a special event to raise money towards this race. On Saturday Marc 27, 2010 SCP Juventude organized its first ‘Bra Crawl’ throughout some local bars in the city of Newark. The way the event worked, participants would make a suggested $5 donation, and in turn would receive a bracelet which entitled them to reduced drink prices at the participating bars.
The end result, it was a fun night, in which SCP Juventude raised awareness for Breast cancer by having some of its male members wear bras, and was able to raise $600.00 towards the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

 

 
On April 25, 2010 SCP Juventude’s current and past members represented Sport Club Português, and the Portuguese community by partaking in the 2010 Komen North Hersey Race for the Cure in the honor of our passed member Jennifer Goncalves.
