Sport Club Portuguese Soccer: Over a Century of Passion and Excellence
Founded in 1921 by a small yet determined Portuguese-American community in Newark, NJ, Sport Club Portuguese (SCP) began with a singular goal: to establish a soccer team that would represent their heritage and passion for the sport. This vision has since transcended generations. In recognition of its extraordinary contributions to the sport, SCP was inducted into the New Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame in 2021.
Walking through the halls of the SCP clubhouse today, one cannot help but be inspired by the countless trophies and accolades on display. These artifacts tell the story of over 100 years of dedication, camaraderie, and triumph. From the very beginning, SCP made its mark, winning the New Jersey State Cup in 1928—an extraordinary feat achieved during its first year of participation.
Throughout the decades, SCP has been a powerhouse in amateur soccer, competing in some of the most prestigious leagues in the tri-state area. The 1950s and 1960s marked a golden era for the club, as the semi-professional team, Newark Portuguese, took to the field, drawing large crowds and fierce competitors. These were the years when SCP hosted and played against legendary teams like Manchester United (1952), Chelsea FC (1954), and Everton FC (1955), solidifying its reputation on an international scale.
SCP has also left its mark in leagues such as the Italian-American Soccer League, LISA, Champions League, Southern NY State Soccer Association, and the Garden State Soccer League. Each match was not just a game but a testament to the enduring spirit of the Portuguese community and its commitment to excellence.
Today, SCP’s soccer program remains vibrant and active, fielding four competitive teams in the Garden State Soccer League. These teams continue to uphold the values of hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship that have defined SCP for over a century.
Sport Club Portuguese soccer is more than just a game; it’s a legacy, a celebration of culture, and a testament to what can be achieved through unity and perseverance. As we look forward to the future, we invite you to be part of this extraordinary journey. Whether as a player, supporter, or fan, your passion fuels our success.
