On Saturday, March 8, Rancho Camponeses do Minho celebrated its 34th anniversary with a grand event at Sport Club Português, reaffirming its vital role in preserving and promoting Minho and Portuguese culture. This celebration was a testament to the group’s mission to engage the youth, ensuring that our community continues to provide younger generations with the opportunity to learn and experience the rich traditions of Portuguese folklore.
The atmosphere at SCP was one of joy and pride. Around 6:30 PM, guests began arriving, and soon the hall was filled with Luso-Americans excited to be part of this special occasion. Little by little, the beautifully decorated SCP Hall, with its traditional Portuguese tiles, started to fill with members of the rancho, proudly wearing their stunning blue outfits. It was a moment of pride and emotion, as multiple generations of group members moved around the room, showing their deep connection to their Portuguese roots and their gratitude for the chance to share their passion with the audience.
As the time for the performance approached, one could not help but notice the excitement of the parents preparing the youngest dancers—some as young as two or three years old—already dressed in their traditional costumes. It was an inspiring sight, a true reflection of the commitment of families to passing down traditions to future generations.
At 9:30 PM, Mr. Alberto Veloso proudly entered the hall, leading the group, and the big performance began. The adult rancho was the first to take the stage, followed by the youth rancho, and after each dance, the room erupted in applause, filled with admiration and emotion. The director of the rancho, Miguel Veloso, addressed the crowd, expressing his gratitude to everyone in attendance, as well as to each member of the group and especially the parents who bring their children to rehearsals every Friday night, ensuring the continuation of this rich cultural legacy.
For four unforgettable hours, Sport Club Português felt like Portugal itself. We had the privilege of watching one of the finest folklore groups in the United States perform, and for a brief moment, we forgot that we were on the other side of the Atlantic.
