Rusgas at SCP: A Celebration of Minho Tradition

Each January, the Sport Club Português transforms into a vibrant stage of culture and tradition, thanks to the Rusgas event organized by the Rancho Camponeses do Minho. What began as a heartfelt initiative by the group’s director, Miguel Veloso, has blossomed into a cherished tradition that attracts hundreds of guests and multiple local folklore groups.

Rusgas, deeply rooted in the Minho region of Portugal, are lively celebrations filled with music, dance, and colorful costumes. Originating as harvest festivals, they have evolved into grand parades where “tropas”—groups of performers—showcase their choreographed dances, traditional songs, and intricate attire. These festivities celebrate the essence of Minho’s cultural heritage, bringing the joy of traditions like the spirited vira dance to life.

At SCP, the Rusgas event does more than entertain; it fulfills our mission of preserving and passing down our rich Portuguese traditions to the next generation. The leaders of Rancho Camponeses do Minho play a vital role in engaging our youth, inspiring them to embrace their cultural roots and carry forward the legacy of Minho folklore.

For one night, our club echoes with the rhythms of the accordion, the beat of the bombos, and the joyful steps of dancers in a kaleidoscope of costumes. It’s a moment to celebrate heritage, community, and the enduring spirit of Portuguese culture.

We invite you to join us each year and experience the magic of Rusgas—a celebration that unites generations and keeps our traditions alive.
